Saree can be draped in many ways and styles. It is so versatile that you can mix and match it with any wear: Sanjay Garg, Founder Raw Mango

On the eve of World Saree Day, FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) hosted a compelling talk titled “The Saree: Six Yards of Sustainable Heritage” at Hotel Leela in Banjara Hills. Celebrated every year on December 21, this year’s event featured Sanjay Garg, a pioneer in textiles and the founder of the Raw Mango brand, in conversation with Priya Gazdar, Chairperson of FLO Hyderabad. The discussion explored the cultural significance, evolution, and future of the saree.

Sanjay Garg highlighted the timeless appeal of the saree, describing it as a remarkable testament to history and culture. He noted that the saree has stood the test of time for over 5,000 years, with its origins tracing back to 5 millennium BC. Ancient Indian weavers used dyes like indigo, turmeric, red madder, and lac to create vibrant cotton drapes worn by women. Despite evolving with fashion trends, the saree has preserved its essence, remaining adaptable and deeply tied to Indian identity.

Over the years, the saree has undergone numerous adaptations, transitioning from traditional silk and cotton to contemporary materials and styles. Innovations in fabric, design, length, and accessories have kept the saree relevant. Trends like designer sarees, stitched sarees, and one-minute sarees have emerged, influenced by Bollywood, the British era, and the need for comfort. Additionally, the fusion of traditional sarees with Western elements has given rise to the Indo-Western fashion trend, creating unique and stylish outfits that reflect both heritage and modernity.

Sanjay Garg, known for his contrarian approach to fashion, stated that he does not believe in following trends but prefers setting them. He emphasized the saree’s flexibility, noting that it can be paired with ethnic or Western wear, offering endless possibilities. The saree, he said, is not just a garment but a statement that blends tradition and innovation effortlessly.

Discussing regional popularity, Sanjay observed that sarees are more prevalent in South India, followed by the East, West, and North. Outside India, the saree is well-regarded in Southeast Asia, including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Globally, its appeal continues to grow, with celebrities like Serena and Venus Williams, Oprah Winfrey, and Julia Roberts embracing it. The saree was also prominently showcased during the G-20 summit dinner in India and remains a preferred power dress for many women in Indian politics.

To encourage younger generations to embrace the saree, Sanjay stressed the need to highlight its versatility and ease of wear. The saree can be draped in over 150 styles, making it as fashionable as any other garment. He acknowledged that many young women perceive the saree as inconvenient for daily activities, but innovations like stitched and pre-draped sarees address these concerns, making it more practical for modern lifestyles.

Reflecting on the success of his brand, Raw Mango, Sanjay credited its deep roots in Indian heritage and tradition. He emphasized the importance of continuous innovation and flexibility, pushing boundaries while respecting cultural essence. This approach, he noted, sets Raw Mango apart in the fashion world.

Priya Gazdar, Chairperson of FLO Hyderabad, in her closing remarks, highlighted the profound symbolism of the saree. “Our ancient scriptures describe the saree as a celestial gift, symbolizing grace, purity, and intellect. The pallu represents protection, while the pleats signify streams of knowledge. Preserving this tradition isn’t just about honoring our heritage but also about empowering rural artisans and building a sustainable future. The saree is more than just a garment; it’s a bridge between our past and present,” she shared.
