Amitava Mukherjee Assumes Charge as CMD of NMDC, Leading Growth and Innovation in India’s Largest Iron Ore Producer.
Amitava Mukherjee has officially assumed office as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, effective from March 6, 2025. A distinguished officer from the 1996 batch of the Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), Shri Mukherjee has extensive experience in financial and strategic leadership.
Before his appointment, Shri Mukherjee had been leading NMDC as CMD (Additional Charge) since March 2023 while serving as Director (Finance) since November 2018. He also holds the position of Chairman for NMDC Steel Limited and Legacy Iron Ore Limited, further strengthening his credentials as a key figure in the mining and steel industries.

Under his visionary leadership, NMDC achieved historic milestones, becoming the first iron ore mining company in India to surpass 45 million tonnes of output in the fiscal year 2023-24. The company also recorded its highest-ever turnover and net worth, a testament to Mukherjee’s strategic acumen. His tenure has been marked by the adoption of cutting-edge digital infrastructure, resumption of operations at the country’s only mechanized diamond mine, and expansion into international markets.
One of his most significant achievements has been commissioning the NMDC Steel Plant, now a symbol of industrial progress in Bastar. Mukherjee has also played a key role in NMDC’s foray into gold mining in Australia, setting the stage for the company’s global expansion. His stewardship is expected to further propel NMDC towards achieving its ambitious goal of building a 100 million tonnes per annum mining capacity by 2030.
His appointment highlights his influence on India’s industrial and economic landscape, particularly in the mining sector. With a deep commitment to responsible mining, financial discipline, and innovation, Mukherjee is poised to lead NMDC into a future of growth and global prominence.
