Interview with Harshith Reddy:

When did you first decide you wanted to act in films?

I liked to act and emote but I was never so serious about a career in films. However, most of my videos involved acting. I was doing more lip sync videos. It was only when I started to get offers for acting, I decided, I will do videos in my own voice. I wanted to see if my followers continue to like me in my original videos. Then I began taking up every script that came my way. Gradually I realised I had to be careful about choosing my roles.

How did you get your first role in the film ‘Mail’?

I give the credit of getting my first role in a film to YouTube. I was dubbing for one of the videos in a studio when the AD spotted me and introduced me to the director. They asked me to send an audition clip on WhatsApp. This was during the first lockdown. As soon as the lockdown was relaxed shooting started for ‘Mail’. We stayed in a government boys hostel near Mahabubabad. We shot in the nearby villages. It was a very different experience. And, I learned the actual process of filmmaking.

‘Mail’ received much praise. How was life after your first film?

By the time I began doing short films for YouTube and Chaibisket, I knew I wanted to have a career in films. I was having fun acting and thought I had time to actually start trying for roles in a big way. But, I had the opportunity when I was just 21. With ‘Mail’ I had the most beautiful experience. It was the best thing that happened to me as a young actor. I knew there was no looking back. I had to look for a good role, and it was not going to be easy. Roles for young boys my age are not written often. Yet, I started giving auditions and look tests for some of the projects.

What about your parents? Are they happy?

We are a typical middle-class family. My sister works in the software industry. I was studying well and had no backlogs. And, so my parents did not complain when I was doing my videos. Now, they are happy and proud of me. They fully support me now.
