The Infinite Weave – The Resilient Art of Avani Rao Gandra

“Within a fragmented and transient world we live in, I try to focus on the enduring power of nature and the human spirit through the use of eco-friendly material like cotton, grass, and thread, the artist weaves a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant-a reminder that even in the face of time’s relentless passage, there is beauty in stillness and peace, in persistence.”

Artist and curator Avani Rao Gandra is showcasing her series of mixed media works – ‘The Infinite Weave’ at the India Art Festival on April 4, – 6 at Kings Crown Convention, Reti Bowli. Gudimalkapur Road.

For this series The Infinite Weave Avani has used natural material – drawn directly from the earth that carry with them a sense of authenticity and connection to the environment. She feels that beyond their physicality, the carry with them a force that transcends the individual forms of sun, seed, leaf, and feather. through abstracted symbolism.

Her works are an attempt to capture the essence of this energy, to bridge the tangible and the intangible, the material and the spiritual. They are born from a desire to explore the themes of resilience, balance, and peace.

She says, “It’s a journey inward, to find solace in the quiet strength of natural material and the gentle embrace of nature’s creation. Within the tactile textures lies unbounded, existential energy.”

“The process of creating these works is deeply meditative, mirroring the stillness and patience embodied by the material themselves, each thread wrapped, each strand of grass placed, is an act of mindfulness-a deliberate effort to connect with the essence of these materials and the stories they carry.”

For her work ‘The White Weave’ she uses subtle beige and white tones, to represent the cycles of life-degeneration and rebirth. She has created a weathered aesthetic within the cotton yarn, that evokes the passage of time and the transformative energy of nature. the universal flow of energy that allows elements to dissolve, mingle, and re-emerge in new forms-leaf, flower, bird, animal, human. the organic material creates a tactile surface that mirror the textures of the natural world.

Her Flamed Banyan Tree (a recurring motif in her works) also has a weathered aesthetic that evoke the passage of time and the enduring energy of nature the banyan, with its deep roots and expansive canopy, reminding us of our connection to the earth and to each other.

In the work Sunflower: Cycles of Infinity the artist captures the sunflower’s journey from bloom to decay, and its ultimate return to the universal energy that animates all life. Rendered in expressionist abstraction symbolising transformation of energy the artist reaffirms her deep reverence for the natural world and a commitment to sustainability.

“By using eco-friendly materials, I aim to create art that not only reflects nature but also exists in harmony with it. these materials, with their organic textures and tactile surfaces, allow me to recreate the feel of nature in a way that goes beyond visual representation.” Avani states.

Avani Rao Gandra, artist, researcher, curator and founder of ICONART Gallery pays ode to the quiet power of nature and the human capacity to find peace amidst chaos through this series.
