Inclusive Art Showcase at Salar Jung Museum ‘Diverse Voices: Art Beyond Boundaries’ is organised by The Art Sanctuary

In a first of its kind, the Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad in collaboration with the The Art Sanctuary, is organising an exhibition titled “Diverse Voices: Art Beyond Boundaries” from 19th October to 27th October 2024 at Salar Jung Museum. The Hon’ Governor of Telangana inaugurated this show on 19th October at 11 am.

This unique exhibition, supported by the Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi, is a showcase 100 artworks by neurodiverse artists hailing from various corners of India. The exhibition encompasses a diverse range of mediums, including paintings, drawings, photographs, digital art and clay/ plastic models. Each artwork offers a peep into their worlds. Through their expressive endeavours, these artists navigate the complexities of their social environments, offering not only artistic value but also serving as a source of inspiration for many. The exhibition’s Catalogue was released during the inauguration ceremony, offering a comprehensive overview of the showcased artworks and their creators.

This inclusive art exhibition is curated by Dr. Atiya Amjad, well known in the field of art and literacy. The exhibition promises to be a captivating exploration into the artistic realm of neurodiverse individuals.

October month is celebrated in the world as awareness building about an intellectual challenge called Down Syndrome. This exhibition serves as a testament to the organisation’s commitment to creating welcoming environments for all individuals. The inclusive Art show promotes awareness, accessibility, inclusiveness, diversity and force us to increasingly recognise the need to offer welcoming environments for all and explores innovative approaches to accommodate people with varying needs.

Over the past five years, The Art Sanctuary (TAS) has supported hundreds of neurodiverse visual artists across India through partnerships with prestigious organizations like FTII, Pune, National Museum, New Delhi and NGMA, New Delhi. TAS facilitates specialized courses, workshops, and emotional therapy sessions, all provided at no cost to the artists. These initiatives aim to empower neurodiverse individuals and promote inclusivity in the arts.

Ashish Goyal, Director of the Salar Jung Museum, emphasized the significance of the exhibition: “This exhibition serves as a vital platform for the neurodiverse artists to present their works and unique perspectives to the public, fostering connections and promoting understanding in our society. I am sure “Diverse Voices: Art Beyond Boundaries” will prove to be a testament to the spirit of inclusiveness and the belief in the ability of art to inspire positive change within our communities.”

Sharing her perspective on the upcoming exhibition Shalini Gupta, Founder Trustee, The Art Sanctuary, said: “At The Art Sanctuary, we firmly believe in the transformative potential of art to transcend boundaries and forge meaningful connections. Through their artworks, these artists offer profound insights into the human condition, challenging societal norms and perceptions. We hope this exhibition serves as a catalyst for fostering greater understanding and appreciation for neurodiversity within our communities.”

Dr. Atiya Amjad, as the curator of this exhibition, said “Through this curation, we aim to showcase the multiplicity of media and forms professed by the neurodiverse artists participating in this show. All artists etch out their aesthetics to rest their creative statements before their audience. It is up to spectators now to revisit the condition of innocence they must have long forgotten to carry forward in their lives”

Established in 1951 under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the venue for the art show Salar Jung Museum of India in Hyderabad is one of the country’s largest museums. It serves as a repository of a diverse array of artifacts spanning from the prehistoric era to contemporary works of art, boasting a collection of over 60,000 artworks.
