The famous lac bangles from Hyderabad’s Laad Bazaar near Charminar have now been granted Geographical Indication (GI) registration. This GI tag was issued on Saturday, March 2, by the GI Registry of the Government of India. #Hyderabad Lac Bangles are well known in the local and international market due to the skill and creativity of the craftsmen in the region applied in making of the lacquered stone studded bangles. The craft originated 500 years ago during Mughal period. These bangles were worn by women in royal households. In Laad Bazaar alone, approximately 15,000 people are employed in making lac bangles.
The Crescent Handicrafts Artisans Welfare Association submitted the application for GI Tag to this centuries-old craft. Since the 15th century, it is a unique craft of making lac bangles that were initially adorned by royalty before becoming the most important accessory for celebratory occasions in Hyderabadi Muslim families. Over the years, more colors and designs made their way into the dozens of bangle stores tucked into the lanes branching out of Charminar. The entire bazaar is called Laad Bazar, and the bangles that now have a GI Tag are bought as souvenirs or simply for their beauty and colors. And, the buyers profile has expanded beyond the traditional buyers.
Once in the bazaar, the glitter and shimmer of the colorful stone-studded bangles are a real feast to the eyes. Hyderabadi women are very particular about buying bangles, especially for Eid and marriages. She may be a daily wage worker or a rich housewife; she does not compromise on buying the best bangles possible.
A quick detour takes you to the workshops where the kaarigars are busy making these bangles in special wax. The making of the bangles begins with procuring the lac and rings. Orders are taken and completed within 8 to 10 days. The elegance and beauty of these bangles come from the rhinestone crystals in vibrant colors, semi-precious stones, pearls, mirror, and glasswork stuck to the lac in stunning designs.
