Begum Razia Baig mentored her son’s career in theatre from a very young age
Popular actor and celebrated theatre personality Mohammad Ali Baig, who gained praise for his performances in Sardar, Cobra and She in recent years, lost his mother, theatre matriarch Begum Razia Baig recently. Begum Razia (73) mentored the Padmashri-winning actor right after he lost his father, theatre veteran Qadir Ali Baig at an early age.
Besides inspiring two generations of stage performers and audiences over multiple decades, she produced several plays in Hindustani and also chaired the prestigious theatre festival run by her family. Her work was received highly at the University of Oxford, Edinburgh and France and other European theatre festivals.
Begum Razia Baig breathed her last at their palatial family haveli in Hyderabad. Also a recipient of the ‘Woman of the Decade in Theatre’ honour in 2014, she won several awards for excellence in performing arts. Several industry colleagues and family friends including Lillette Dubey, Supriya Pathak, Suhasini Maniratnam, Vani Ganapathy, Juhi Babbar, Ila Arun paid condolences to the family upon hearing the news.
