Flute maestro Rakesh Chaurasia and Carnatic music virtuoso, Veena player Dr. Jayanti Kumaresh brings together North on South on one stage

Uttar Dakshin concert series, known for fostering regional harmony between North and South India, graced Hyderabad as part of its illustrious six-city tour, spanning Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Ranchi, and now Hyderabad. On March 2nd, 2024, the classical Jugalbandi series mesmerized audiences at the Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU) auditorium in Masabtank.

Presented by Vivid Arts in collaboration with Surmandal, Hyderabad, and with support from LIC of India and ONGC, the event showcased a captivating duet featuring this year’s Grammy Award Winner, Rakesh Chaurasia, renowned for his mastery of the flute, and the illustrious Carnatic virtuoso, Dr. Jayanti Kumaresh, skillfully playing the Saraswati Veena. Their solos were followed by a spellbinding Jugalbandi, enchanting the audience with their musical prowess.

Accompanying these maestros were a lineup of accomplished artists, including Narahari on tabla, Vidwan Jayachandra Rao on the mridangam, and Vidwan Giridhar Udupa on the ghatam, enhancing the depth and richness of the musical tapestry.

Before the commencement of the concert, a poignant homage was paid to the late Pankaj Udhas ji, marking his recent passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to the classical music world.

Rakesh Chaurasia commenced his performance with Raag Poorva Kalyan, captivating the audience with his soulful flute recital and engaging in mesmerizing jugalbandi. Reflecting on the recent loss of Mohan Hemmadi, music aficionado and curator, he expressed condolences, emphasizing the profound impact Hemmadi had on the classical music community.

Dr. Jayanti Kumaresh followed with her solo Veena recital, delving into Raag Amritha Vashini, a composition welcoming the rain and invoking a sense of serenity.

The 13th edition of Uttar Dakshin promised a celebration of musical diversity, showcasing the distinct styles of two masterful artists. The evening commenced with the musicians guiding listeners on an unforgettable musical odyssey.

Uttar Dakshin continues to foster regional harmony between North and South India through the melodic interplay of two distinct musical traditions. As it tours major cities across India, it aims to spread musical joy and cultural unity, embodying the essence of musical collaboration and appreciation.
